Occasionally it is necessary to revisit the Second Amendment. It is the most misquoted, most attacked, and most loved Amendment of them all. When you read the Second Amendment, it either stirs feelings of great affection or extreme hatred. In hopes of dispelling rumor and addressing the misplaced hatred normally directed at the Second Amendment in the media, we will address things on a level playing field. We will address real statistical fact and follow the evidence to the conclusion the facts direct us to.
FACTS ACCORDING TO FBI STATS
- Background checks for guns in 2013 – 21,093,273 – record high level
- Violent crimes decreased by 4.4 percent from 2012 figures
- 5 year trend for violent crime and property crime shows down trend
- No significant difference in areas where firearms are harder to obtain
- Concealed carry numbers have only gotten higher over past 5 years
- Preliminary 2014 statistics show no significant change in trend…continues down
- Background checks do not account for all guns sold
So, why all the statistical deception by gun control lobbyists? Why the statistical cherry picking from other countries around the world? Why do we continue to hear anti-gun rhetoric claiming gun violence is only getting worse? Why is gun control touted as the fix to all that is evil in this world?
You really must ask and answer a hard question here. Who does gun control apply to? Lobbyists will tell you it applies to everyone. In a utopian delusion this would be true. All laws apply to all people. As a society we understand theft, homicide, rape and other crimes are a) Socially unacceptable behaviors and b) Against the law. Those of us who chose to conduct ourselves as responsible, law abiding, productive members of society generally stick to the socially accepted norm and follow applicable laws. Those who choose to conduct themselves in the opposite manner do so in conflict with the socially accepted norm and applicable laws. You see, just by writing, voting, and imposing any law you do so with faith in humans to abide by it. Law enforcement is there to provide remedy for those who chose to disobey. Gun control laws like all laws are only followed by law abiding citizens. Those who choose to conduct themselves criminally will still obtain a gun with or without laws in place to prevent it. We currently have laws prohibiting felons from possessing a firearm. Another law is not going to compel them to comply as the current ones haven’t. Enforcement of current laws seems to be working quite well by statistical analysis. If you ever want to see what happens when you remove guns from the equation, go to your local jail and look at the improvised guns and other weapons criminals have made in order to do harm to others. These are the people lobbyists would have you believe will be controlled by mere words. When in reality its only me and you who will abide by them, be disarmed by them, and suffer at the hands of those who do not abide by the same regulation.
Why the statistical cherry picking? Simple, because the facts as shown in this simple graph do not support their arguments. Violent crime is trending down as CCW permits and background checks for guns soar. The FBI provides loads of information yearly that isn’t tainted by any bias or news slant. Rather than report the fact that less and less Americans are dying every year, they jump to statistical comparison of other countries without taking into account per capita. Or they jump to statistics like firearms accidents or death by firearms that doesn’t take into account legally owned or illegally owned. Generalizations are made like, “when the number of firearms go up the number of accidents go up.” In the grand scheme of things it should be common sense for Americans to see that laws are only going to be followed by those who would normally follow laws thereby disarming law abiding citizens and not criminals.
The U.S. Constitution was written in very explicit language. There is no room for interpretation.
